    Abstract:.

    Despite its tremendousinfluences on global weather extremes, representation of the Madden-Julianoscillation (MJO) remains a grand challenge for present-day climate models. Theessential MJO physics is also elusive. In this talk, I will start with anintroduction of our recent analyses based on observations and multi-modelsimulations under a moisture mode theoretical framework, which suggest that thelarge-scale seasonal mean lower-tropospheric moisture pattern plays a crucialrole in regulating MJO eastward propagation over the Indo-Pacific region duringboreal winter. Additional evidences on the important role of low-level meanmoisture for MJO propagation will be further presented by examining theobserved seasonal and interannual variations in MJO propagation characteristics,as well as based on idealized GCM simulations. These results provide importantguidance for improvement of MJO representation in climate models.
